When you’re learning a language it’s important to know where you’re going.
Many students start a course without taking the time to see what topics and grammar – Themen und Grammatik – they are going to cover. It’s like setting out on a journey without a map, not knowing where your destination is, and at what stage you are at on the journey – die Reise.
On these maps I’ve set out the usual topic areas you will cover in most course books and examinations, as well as the most important grammar points, plus important areas such as using a dictionary – das Wörterbuch – either online or in print, and other resources.
The map – die Karte – gives you an overview of the main areas to be covered from beginner to intermediate level and they are roughly in the order you will cover them.
At the beginning of a course you can use it like a contents page of a book. You’ll know what to expect, and roughly when to expect it.
As you progress, you can use it as a checklist to find out which areas you’ve covered and which you still need to do.
